About the American Quarter Horse

One of the oldest horse breeds in the world, the American quarter horse is well regarded by horse enthusiasts and other equine aficionados as an exceptionally athletic and trainable breed. In addition to its speed, the American quarter horses is known for its robust build, docile temperament, and high level of intelligence, all of which make it an excellent work animal that is appropriate for both novice and experienced horseback riders. The breed was named due to its ability to run a quarter mile at incredible speeds. In fact, some American quarter horses have run the quarter mile in under 21 seconds.

The genetic base of the American quarter horse consists of contributions from four major bloodlines: Spanish Barb horses of the Chickasaw people, wild Mustangs from west of the Mississippi River, and both draft-type built English stock horses and thoroughbred horses from England. These bloodlines combined to create the modern-day American quarter horse well-known for ranch work and racing.
